Our Timing Chain Services Include:

Why does the timing chain need replacing?

The timing chain may need to be replaced if the chain stretches or becomes worn. This happens when the metal links wear away at the pins and bushings causing the chain to slowly stretch. Often these issues are caused by poor lubrication, due to dirty or low engine oil. On average, the timing chain needs to be replaced every 100,000 to 200,000 miles, but proper maintenance is the key to making it last as long as possible.

What are the signs that the timing chain needs replacing?

Some signs that the timing chain could need replacing include:

  • Rattling sound when starting the engine.
  • Engine misfiring – this is when one (or more) of the cylinders fails to ignite the air-fuel mixture.
  • Metal shavings found in the engine oil.
  • An engine warning light on the dashboard. This could be as a result of the ECU detecting incorrect camshaft and crankshaft timing, but the engine warning light can also become illuminated for many other reasons so it’s important to book in for a diagnostic to pinpoint the issue.

FAQs | Timing Chain Replacement

Below you’ll find answers to the most commonly asked questions about timing chains, and how they can become damaged and in need of replacement or repair. Get in touch today if you need your vehicle’s timing chain to be checked or repaired.

What does a timing chain do?

The timing chain acts as the link between the crankshaft and camshaft, so the engine valves open and close at the right times. The crankshaft controls the pistons moving up and down, and the camshaft controls the intake and exhaust valves opening and closing. The timing chain is responsible for keeping them coordinated. It is made from metal and lubricated by the engine oil.

The timing chain is capable of lasting for a very long time (sometimes over 200,000 miles), if the car is well maintained. The main thing that affects it, is the quality of the engine oil. The engine oil should be replaced (along with the oil filter) at least every 10,000 miles or annually. If the oil becomes dirty or runs low, this causes the timing chain to be put under under significantly more strain. Keeping on top of the servicing schedule and checking/ changing the oil regularly is key to making the timing chain last as long as possible.

A timing chain is made from metal, whereas a timing belt is made from rubber. Most vehicles will either have a timing belt or timing chain, as they both perform the same function to link the crankshaft and camshaft to ensure that the engine valves open and close at the right time. Timing chains last longer (sometimes the lifetime of the engine with proper maintenance), but timing belts usually need replacing every 50,000-100,000 miles. Timing belts are cheaper to repair and replace compared to timing chains. Some examples of vehicles with timing chains include many German vehicles (e.g. Mercedes, Audi and BMW models) and cars with a Ford 1.0 EcoBoost for example many Fiesta and Focus models.

A timing chain is typically replaced rather than repaired. This may include individual components (usually the tensioner or guide), but it could also be a complete timing chain replacement depending on the issue.

Continuing to drive with a damaged timing chain will result in misfiring, rattling noises, and weak acceleration, and it will lead to catastrophic engine damage if the timing chain breaks or jumps. This can cause damage to the valves, pistons and the cylinder head. That’s why it’s very important not to drive with a damaged timing chain, as it can lead to very costly repairs in future.

The timing chain usually lasts between 100,000 and 200,000 miles, and the main factor that affects this is how well the vehicle is serviced. Frequent oil changes are crucial to reduce wear on the timing chain, and running with dirty or low oil will significantly reduce the lifespan of it.

Timing chain replacements are a complex process due to their location. They are situated inside the engine and are difficult to reach, so other surrounding parts must be removed before it can even be accessed. The process can take upwards of 8 hours depending on the vehicle.
