DPF Cleaning in Worcester

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) plays a crucial role in the car’s exhaust system to control the emissions. However, it can become clogged with soot if it doesn’t regenerate properly with regular driving. In this event, we can clean and regenerate the DPF to ensure it functions properly again, preventing costly repairs in future.

What does the DPF do?

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) is part of the car’s exhaust system. It traps and removes carbon from the exhaust before it is released into the air. The DPF has a honeycomb ceramic structure which traps soot, stores it and then it burns off when the exhaust temperature is increased. The DPF is an essential component required to help diesel vehicles meet emissions standards.

What are the signs of a blocked DPF?

The main signs of a blocked DPF are a DPF warning light or engine management light on the dashboard. Sometimes the vehicle will also display a message indicating a DPF or emissions fault.

Some other symptoms include:

  • Loss of power – in severe cases a “limp mode” is activated which is when the ECU limits the speed and RPM.
  • Reduced fuel economy – as the exhaust gases struggle to push through the blocked filter.
  • Black exhaust smoke – this is a possible indication of a clogged DPF filter.

FAQs | DPF Cleaning

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about diesel particulate filter regeneration and repairs. If you suspect any issues with your car’s DPF, get in touch with our team today who can diagnose the problem, clean the filter, and repair any damage.

Why does the DPF become blocked?

The DPF becomes blocked when the soot accumulates and is not burnt off properly. The main cause of this is due to frequent short trips. When the car is driven at lower speeds for short journeys or in stop-start traffic, the engine doesn’t maintain the required temperature needed to burn off the soot (known as regeneration). If the DPF doesn’t regenerate properly, the soot will build up and clog the filter. This is why diesel vehicles are best suited for high-mileage drivers. If the vehicle is only driven on short journeys, then the DPF will get clogged much more quickly.

A clogged DPF can be cleaned by:

  • Active regeneration – this is the first option which will usually work on a DPF which isn’t overly clogged.
  • Chemical cleaning – using cleaning agents and additives in the exhaust to break down the soot.
  • Pneumatic cleaning – using compressed air to dislodge the soot.

In severe cases, the DPF may need to be replaced if cleaning is insufficient to remove the blockage.

When the engine reaches the required temperature to burn off the soot collected in the DPF, this is known as passive regeneration. It happens naturally during longer drives and at steady speeds, for example when driving on the motorway. Active DPF regeneration is an automated process when the ECU raises the exhaust temperature to burn off the accumulated soot.

A blocked DPF can cause severe damage to the engine if left untreated. It will cause the exhaust system to become inefficient, and for gases to build up in the system and increase back-pressure. This puts strain on the system and leads to premature wear and potentially very expensive damage in future.

On average, it takes a couple of hours to regenerate and clean a clogged DPF, however if it is more severe then it may take longer than this.

A blocked DPF can lead to an MOT failure indirectly, as it is likely to cause it to fail the emissions test carried out as part of an MOT. Also, if it causes the DPF warning light (or engine management light) to be illuminated on the dashboard, this will result in an automatic failure. If the DPF has been tampered with or is missing entirely, the car will automatically fail the MOT test.

This will depend on the specific situation. If there is no history of DPF issues, then it’s likely that the DPF just needs regenerating or cleaning. However, if there have been multiple DPF warnings over a longer period of time, or multiple failed regeneration attempts, then it may need to be replaced. We can assess the DPF and how best to proceed.
