Can issues with the exhaust system result in an MOT fail?

Yes, issues with a vehicle’s exhaust system will result in an MOT failure. During the test, it is assessed to ensure it’s free from leaks, fitted securely and does not produce excessive noise. The vehicle’s carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions are also tested, and since the exhaust plays a crucial role in controlling these emissions, any issues are likely to result in an MOT failure.

FAQs | Exhaust System Repairs

Here you’ll find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about a car’s exhaust system. If you notice any issues such as unusual sounds, smells, or fumes, get in touch with our team who can diagnose the problem and advise on the repairs.

What are the main components of the exhaust system?

Here are some of the key components in a car’s exhaust system:

  • Manifolds – funnels exhaust gases from the engine cylinders into a single pipe.
  • Catalytic converter – converts harmful emissions into carbon dioxide and water.
  • Oxygen sensors – monitors how much oxygen is in the exhaust gases so the ECU can adjust the fuel mixture accordingly.
  • DPF or GPF – particulate filters which trap soot from the exhaust gases.
  • Resonator – cancels out harsh exhaust noises.
  • Muffler – reduces the noise produced by the engine’s exhaust system.
  • Gaskets and clamps – ensure proper sealing of certain components.
  • Exhaust tip – the part visible from the car’s exterior.

The main function of the exhaust system is to transport gases away from the engine and out of the rear of the vehicle. The exhaust system is not only important for the engine’s performance, but also reduces harmful emissions and loud noises.

The catalytic converter is responsible for reducing harmful gases in the exhaust system. All modern petrol and diesel vehicles have one, and they consist of a honeycomb structure coated with precious metal (e.g. platinum, palladium and rhodium). The catalytic converter sits between the manifold and muffler, and functions to turn toxic gases into less harmful ones, for example:

  • Carbon monoxide is converted into carbon dioxide
  • Nitrogen oxide is converted into nitrogen and oxygen
  • Hydrocarbons are converted into carbon dioxide and water
  • Cracked or leaking pipes in the exhaust system.
  • Damage due to corrosion or rust.
  • Clogged or damaged catalytic converter.
  • Faulty oxygen sensors.
  • Blocked GPF or DPF.
  • Broken or loosely fitted mounts.

Some signs to look for are:

  • Unusual noises – if the car’s exhaust sounds louder, this is an indication that there is a crack or leak in the exhaust system. A rattling or knocking sound typically indicates a broken mount but could also be internal damage to the muffler or catalytic converter.
  • Unusual smells – this is a sign that the exhaust is leaking. This is very serious as the exhaust gases are toxic.
  • Reduced performance – this typically indicates a blocked catalytic converter or DPF/ GPF.
  • Engine management light – issues with the vehicle’s exhaust system can trigger the engine warning light.
  • Exhaust fumes – these can indicate one of several issues with the exhaust system or engine.

If the exhaust is producing smoke, this is a common sign that there’s an issue. Here are some common problems:

  • White smoke – this could indicate a coolant leak.
  • Black smoke – this may be due to excess fuel being burnt.
  • Blue smoke – this is typically a sign that the car is burning oil.

If you notice any of these issues, get your vehicle checked as soon as possible.

If you notice that your exhaust is louder than usual, this indicates there is an issue that needs looking into by a mechanic. Typically, it’s due to a crack which causes the exhaust to leak, but it could also be due to something like a failed gasket or problem with the muffler.

  • If the vehicle feels sluggish whilst accelerating.
  • If the engine is stalling.
  • The engine management light is illuminated on the dashboard.
  • An increase in fuel consumption.
  • A rotten-egg smell.

These problems can signal a blocked catalytic converter, but could be due to other issues with the vehicle’s engine or exhaust system. A trained mechanic will be able to diagnose if these issues are due to a clogged or damaged catalytic converter.

Not only does the exhaust system affect emissions, but it also has a direct impact on the engine’s performance and fuel efficiency. In order for the engine to function properly, the exhaust system should push the exhaust gases out of the vehicle efficiently. If there is an issue with the exhaust system, it could create “back-pressure”, causing the engine to perform sluggishly.
