What is wheel alignment?

Wheel alignment is also referred to as tracking. During an alignment service, your vehicle’s wheels are adjusted to the direction and angles specified by the manufacturer’s guidelines. This ensures that the vehicle drives straight and does not pull to one side, and helps prevent uneven tread wear. The wheels can become misaligned if the vehicle hits a pothole, kerb or bump at high speed, or if it has been involved in any kind or accident or collision. Driving with misaligned wheels is dangerous as it it makes the vehicle handle unpredictably. FAQs | Wheel Alignment

Here are the answers to some of the most common questions about wheel alignment. If you notice any issues with your vehicle’s wheel alignment, for example, if it’s pulling to one side, get in touch today for a quote to get them realigned.

Why is wheel alignment important?
  • It ensures the car handles correctly and predicably.
  • It prevents uneven tyre tread wear.
  • It can improve fuel consumption. Having misaligned wheels can increase resistance and make the engine work harder.

There are two main types of misalignments: toe-in/ toe-out and negative/ positive camber.

  • Toe-in/ toe-out: this is when the wheels point inward/ outward when viewed from above or below. The wheels will look like they are pigeon-toed or splayed out when viewed from above/ below.
  • Negative/ positive camber: this is when the wheels are tilted inward/ outward when viewed from the front or rear of the vehicle.

There are two types of wheel alignment service:

  • 2-wheel alignment – this covers the front wheels.
  • 4-wheel alignment – this covers all four wheels.

During a 4-wheel alignment service, all four of your vehicle’s wheels are adjusted to manufacturer’s guidelines. It’s typically required on “all-wheel-drive” vehicles which have independent suspension.

A car’s wheel alignment should be checked once a year, or sooner if any issues are encountered in between. It’s important to check the wheel alignment if the vehicle hits a pothole, kerb, or bump at speed, or if it has been involved in any type of collision or accident.

The price of a wheel alignment service varies depending on your vehicle. Get in touch with our team for an accurate quote for your car.

Poor wheel alignment can cause the car to fail an MOT. It’s important that the wheels are properly aligned to make the vehicle safe to drive.

On average, a wheel alignment service takes between 30-60 minutes. It can take longer than this though for 4-wheel alignment, or if there are more complex issues.

Wheel alignment and wheel balancing are not the same.

  • Wheel balancing ensures that the weight distribution within the wheel and tyre is even, to prevent steering vibrations and uneven tyre wear. It should be done whenever new tyres are fitted.
  • Wheel alignment ensures that the wheels are straight and positioned correctly. It should be done once a year, or if the car hits any potholes/ bumps/ kerbs at speed, or has been involved in an accident.
