Why is the engine oil so important?
The engine oil plays an essential role by lubricating the engine, keeping it clean and cooling it down. The oil reduces friction between metal parts, cleans dust and debris to prevent clogging, cools the engine down to prevent overheating and protects it from acids which are generated when the fuel is combusted. Without the lubrication that the engine oil provides, the engine can become severely damaged meaning expensive parts need to be replaced, and in severe cases the engine may need to be rebuilt entirely.
Oil leak repairs in Worcester
How is an oil leak repaired?
The first thing we will do is assess the cause of the oil leak. In many cases this is due to a worn gasket or seal, but also could be due to damage to the oil pan. Once the cause has been identified, we can replace the damaged part. After this, we will re-fill the engine oil so it is at the correct level and check that the leak has been resolved.

FAQs | Oil Leak Repairs
Below you’ll find the answers to some commonly asked questions about oil leaks and how they can be diagnosed and repaired. If you notice an oil leak (usually a dark brown puddle), get in touch with our team today.
What are the main causes of an oil leak?
There are several possible causes of an oil leak. The most common ones include:
- Worn gaskets and seals – over time, the rubber can become brittle and cracked due to exposure to heat, and this can cause the oil to leak out.
- Loose or damaged oil filter – if the oil filter is damaged or not tightened properly, this can cause the oil to leak and usually happens after a recent oil change.
- Damaged/ loosely fitted drain plug – the drain plug may have not been tightened properly, or have a loose or missing gasket.
- Overfilling the oil – if the oil is overfilled, it will create excessive pressure and can cause leaks.
- Old or dirty oil – old/ dirty oil becomes thick and sludgy, putting increased pressure on the seals and gaskets and causing them to wear and become damaged.
- Damage to the oil pan – this can become cracked due to impact from rocks or other debris as it sits at the bottom of the engine.
What does an oil leak look like?
The main sign of an oil leak is a dark brown puddle underneath the vehicle – usually between the front and middle. Other symptoms can include a burning oil smell, a “low oil” warning light, and blue/ grey exhaust smoke. If you notice any of these signs, make sure to get your vehicle inspected by a mechanic immediately as oil leaks can severely damage the engine if left untreated.
What happens if you ignore an oil leak?
If an oil leak is ignored, it can severely damage the engine and lead to very costly repairs. If the vehicle is leaking oil, then the level will become too low and the important functions it performs will not be carried out. This results in:
- Poor lubrication – causing increased friction and wear on metal parts e.g. pistons and bearings.
- Overheating – without the lubrication of the engine oil, this increased friction causes excessive heat build-up and can lead to smoke and burning smells.
- Engine damage – low oil can cause the engine to seize and parts to become permanently damaged. In some cases, only certain parts may be damaged, but in severe cases the entire engine may need to be replaced.
Can I carry on driving if the engine oil is low?
If you notice an oil leak or the engine oil light is illuminated on your dashboard, it’s very important not to continue driving the vehicle. Not only is this potentially dangerous and can even cause a fire, but it can also severely damage the engine and lead to very expensive repairs. Instead, get your vehicle recovered if you’re out and about, or call your local garage if you’re at home.
How do I prevent oil leaks in future?
One of the main causes of oil leaks is due to worn gaskets and seals. Although these age naturally over time, the process is dramatically accelerated by old or dirty oil. Having the oil and filter changed regularly will make sure the wear is not increased and reduces the risk of leaks. On most cars, the engine oil should be replaced every 10,000 miles or annually (whichever comes first), but on higher mileage cars it’s advisable to get this done every 6 months. It’s also important not to overfill the engine oil, and to check the level regularly (once a month) so any small leaks can be identified early.
