Automatic gearbox servicing in Worcester

How often should an automatic gearbox be serviced?

It’s recommended to service an automatic gearbox every 30,000-40,000 miles. Regularly servicing the transmission can prevent costly repairs and breakdowns in future, and extend the life of the gearbox. Even on newer vehicles which typically have better transmission fluid that can last up to 60,000 miles, it’s still advisable to have this checked every 30,000 miles to ensure it hasn’t degraded prematurely.

FAQs | Automatic Transmission Servicing

Here you’ll find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about automatic gearboxes and the maintenance they require. Get in touch today if you’re in the Worcester area and are looking to get your car’s automatic transmission checked and serviced.

What are the signs that my car needs an automatic transmission service?

We would advise servicing the transmission on a routine basis rather than waiting for issues to arise, but if you’re unsure of the vehicle’s history and notice any of the following signs, then it’s time to book in for a service:

  • Delayed shifting – for example a rise in the RPMs before the car shifts into gear.
  • Slipping gears – when the acceleration does not match the increase in revs.
  • Vibrations or shaking when the transmission changes gear – this indicates that the transmission fluid is not lubricating properly.
  • Strange noises when the transmission changes gear – this signals that certain parts may not be lubricated properly due to old or low transmission fluid.
  • Burning smell – this indicates the transmission fluid is old.
  • Red or dark brown fluid leaks – this indicates that the transmission fluid is leaking.

An automatic transmission service can include the following:

  • The transmission fluid is drained or flushed, and new fluid is added so it reaches the proper level.
  • The transmission fluid filter is replaced as this can collect debris over time. This allows the fluid to flow properly and prevents it getting contaminated as quickly.
  • The pan is cleaned and checked for any damage. The gasket is also replaced to prevent leaks.
  • The torque converter systems are flushed and refilled. This helps to prevent juddering and ensure that power is delivered smoothly.

We can discuss your vehicle and the level of service required before you book in for an automatic transmission service.

The transmission fluid plays a crucial role in ensuring the transmission system works properly, by lubricating the moving parts e.g. gears, bearings and clutches. The fluid coats the metal parts to protect them from corrosion and reduce wear. It also helps to cool down the system and prevent overheating which will otherwise lead to transmission failure.

The transmission fluid will get dirty over time as it gets contaminated with small metal particles and breaks down with heat exposure. This is a part of the natural wear process, and means that the fluid needs replacing at set intervals so it can still perform its crucial functions. Clean transmission fluid is clear and bright red, whereas old fluid usually looks dark brown and cloudy.

If you notice any puddles underneath the car that are either bright red or dark brown, this could be the transmission fluid leaking. Usually this is due to a worn gasket or seal, but could be due to a damaged transmission pan. In any case, the leak should be investigated by a mechanic as soon as possible, as low transmission fluid levels can cause the system to wear prematurely and even fail completely.

Automatic gearboxes can last over 200,000 miles, but this depends on how well they are maintained. Regular servicing and transmission fluid changes are crucial to prevent wear and overheating. Driving habits will also affect the lifespan. For example, stop-start traffic and aggressive acceleration will put the transmission under more stress and wear leading to earlier failure.

Some of the most common problems we see with automatic transmissions are:

  • Dirty or old transmission fluid – this leads to a whole host of problems such as premature wear on metal parts, strange noises, burning smells, slipping gears and vibrations.
  • Fluid leaks – this leads to low transmission fluid levels and is usually caused by a worn seal or gasket, overfilled transmission fluid, or a damaged pan.
  • Clutch wear – this will result in slipping gears, delayed engagement, and can produce a burning smell or strange sounds.

There are several different types of automatic transmission systems including torque converter, dual-clutch automatic (also known as DSG/ DCT), continuously variable transmission (also known as CVT), and automated manual transmission (also known as AMT). Here at Recharged Automotive in Worcester, we have over 30 years of experience working on all types of cars and offer servicing for all automatic transmission systems.
