FAQs | Vehicle Electrical System Repairs

Below you’ll find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about a car’s electrical system, the common faults, and how they’re repaired. Get in touch with our team of experts today if you have any issues with your vehicle’s electrical system and we can diagnose and repair the problem.

What are the main components of a car's electrical system?

The major components of a vehicle’s electrical system include:

  • Battery: stores chemical energy and converts it to electrical energy to start the engine and power electrical components when the engine is turned off.
  • Alternator: generates electricity to power the system when the vehicle is turned on.
  • Wiring: distributes electricity from the battery or alternator to the various components which require power.
  • Fuse box: protects the circuits from overcurrent.
  • Sensors: record and measure different readings from the car’s other systems (e.g. engine and exhaust) such as temperature, fuel-air mixture, and emissions levels.
  • ECU: the car’s computer system which receives information from sensors and manages other systems such as the engine and exhaust.
  • Ignition system: this consists of various components (ignition switch, ignition coil and spark plugs) and generates the spark needed to ignite the air-fuel mixture.
  • Starter motor: this is an electric motor which cranks the engine so it starts running.

Some signs to look out for that indicate there’s an electrical fault with your vehicle include:

  • Dim or flickering lights e.g. headlights, dashboard lights and inside the cabin.
  • Issues with other electrical components such as power-folding door mirrors, window regulators, electrically-controlled seats, or the infotainment system.
  • The car struggles to start or does not start at all.
  • Dashboard warning lights e.g. battery, engine management or airbag lights.
  • The battery drains quickly.
  • Fuses blowing frequently.
  • The air conditioning and heating systems are faulty.
  • Any burning smells.
  • By keeping your car regularly serviced (at least annually or every 10,000 miles – whichever comes first), is always a good idea and will help to identify any small problems with the electrical system that can be fixed before they become bigger issues.
  • The battery should be checked to ensure that the terminals are free from corrosion, and it should be replaced at least every 3-4 years before it becomes too weak.
  • Avoid running the infotainment system, air conditioning and lights when the car is turned off as this will drain the battery.
  • Don’t ignore any warning lights – get these inspected by a mechanic straight away to prevent further damage to the electrical system.
  • Dim or flickering lights.
  • Issues with the electronics inside the car e.g. the infotainment system, power-folding door mirrors, window regulators etc.
  • Battery warning light or a weak/ dead battery – this could indicate that the alternator is not charging the battery properly.

When there’s an issue with the alternator, the car’s battery will drain and won’t recharge which can make the vehicle stall and prevent it from starting. Depending on the severity of the damage, some components of the alternator can be repaired, or it can be replaced entirely.

  • Alternator repairs – e.g. replacement or repairing of a worn belt or voltage regulator.
  • Battery replacement – this should be done every 3-5 years on average.
  • Starter motor replacement – either a complete replacement or repairs to the wiring.
  • Spark plug replacement – this is common if there’s an issue with the ignition system.
  • Wiring repairs – due to worn connectors or broken wiring.

Yes, the electrical system is checked as part of an MOT test, so any issues will result in a “fail” result. Key components will be checked including the lights, battery, and wiring, and any dashboard warning lights will result in an automatic failure.
