What can cause the brakes to make a strange noise?

The most common causes of noise when braking including:

  • Worn brake pads
  • Worn brake discs
  • Glazed (overheated) brake pads/ discs
  • Poor lubrication between the caliper slide pins

If you hear any strange noises when braking, it’s important to get your brakes checked straight away. Get in touch if you’re in the Worcester area.

Most brake pads need replacing every 20,000-40,000 miles. The exact frequency varies considerably between different vehicles and differs according to:

  • Your driving style – more aggressive driving will result in faster wear.
  • Type of driving – for example driving in heavy traffic will result in faster pad wear compared to motorway driving at a constant speed.
  • Pad material – some pads are made from more durable material than others.

It’s important to get your vehicle checked at least every year or every 10,000 miles to ensure the brake pads are not worn.

In the UK, the minimum brake pad thickness to pass an MOT test is 1.5mm, but it’s highly advised to get them changed when they reach 3mm in order to maintain optimal braking performance.

Most vehicle’s need their brake discs replacing every 30,000-50,000 miles, so slightly less frequently than the brake pads. The exact frequency depends on the disc itself, driving style, and the make and model of vehicle. Typically brake discs which have worn down by 1-2mm from new should be replaced, but each manufacturer has a slightly different wear limit.

The brake fluid on most cars should be changed every 2 years or every 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. It’s common to have this done as part of a major service on the vehicle. The brake fluid acts as a lubricant in the braking system, and helps to slow the vehicle down when the brakes are applied, so it’s vital to keep it fresh.

The brake pads and discs should be checked on a car at least annually, or every 10,000 miles – whichever comes first. This is often performed as part of a routine service, and will also be assessed during an MOT test.

When a vehicle’s brakes are tested by a garage, a combination of visual and physical tests may be used. A visual assessment of the brake pad and discs can be used to determine the wear, and the brake fluid can also be checked to ensure it is not contaminated. A roller brake test can also be used (usually as part of an MOT test) to assess the braking performance.

The cost of new brake pads and discs varies considerably between manufacturers, but on average brake pad replacement costs between £250-£400 for one pair (front or rear). Performance and luxury vehicles have more expensive brake pads than smaller city cars. On average, brake disc replacement costs between £250-£500 in the UK for a pair (front or rear), but the exact cost varies massively between manufacturers. Worn brake pads and discs will result in an MOT failure. The brake pads must be at least 1.5mm thick to pass an MOT. The brake discs must not be less than the manufacturer’s minimum thickness (varies between vehicles) and cannot be cracked or corroded.

It takes roughly 2 hours to replace all the brake pads, and 2-3 hours to replace the brake discs on a car.

Yes, we can assess the ABS and fix common problems. Some common causes include:

  • Faulty speed sensors
  • Low brake fluid
  • Damaged ABS module

These issues typically result in the ABS warning light becoming illuminated on the dashboard, and are associated with problems such as locking wheels, and a spongy-feeling brake pedal. Get in touch if you’re in the Worcester area to get your vehicle checked.
